South Coast Trip – Blog Day 13 Plymouth

Today started with rain and it ended with rain with rain pretty much all the time in between.

Following breakfast we were glad to leave the building site that was our hotel. Thankfully the builders were not doing a night shift.

A short walk to our bus for Plymouth which arrived on time in a deluge…we rushed to the nearest cafe for respite.

The rain appeared to stop and we decided to make a break for our b and b..big mistake we arrived wet through. Thankfully the b and b took pity on us and let us in early and enabled us to dry off.

Our evening was spent at Plymouth College OPM Suite where we were entertained by Sunny Side Up?20160615_194930

During the evening we met with members of The Ginger Prince Challenge who are raising funds in memory of a former colleague. To date The Challenge has raised over ? 500,000 by running various events including The 3 Peaks and Coast to Coast cycle rides. Truly inspirational men.

South Coast Trip – Blog Day 12 Torquay

After a good night’s rest we had a leisurely breakfast and since we overlooked the bus station we had a short walk to catch our bus which took us to Torquay.

On arrival in Torquay we had a quick lunch before walking to Torquay Town Hall, where we had a reception.

Ray Hill, Torbay Councillors and One Accord

We were introduced by Ray Hill Chairman of the council, who invited us to say a few words.

We were entertained by One Accord a delightful choir who performed several pieces from forthcoming show on July 2nd. Anyone who enjoys singing should try to get along to their concert.

We were delighted to see many Torbay Councillors who we were able to talk with at length, about our road trip and about services for PwMND. Torbay council has adopted our Charter but the Councillors were acutely aware of the need for full implementation.

Another fantastic event. Thanks to Sarah Hampton for organising everything.

South Coast Trip – Blog Day 11 Exeter

Early start from Weymouth with breakfast specially prepared for 7.30. We caught our first bus for Lyme Regis which delivered us right on time to catch our onward connection to ?Exeter. This is a beautiful often spectacular trip and well recommended.

We checked into our hotel and enjoyed a brief lunch with Lynn’s son Jon who had a break from work to meet us.

We then went to Exeter Cathedral where we found the Bishop’s Palace. We were due to attend a garden party in the grounds but due to inclement weather Bishop Robert invited us to have our meeting in one of his elegant rooms, where a log fire had been lit for the reception.

Among the guests were Bishop Robert of Exeter, ?Lord Mayor of Exeter Cynthia Thompson, Lady Clarissa Clifford Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Devon and Canon Victoria of Exeter Cathedral.

Sally Light addressed the meeting thanking everyone for attending. We were especially de20160613_143241lighted to see many persons living with MND and their carers enjoying the reception.

Huge thanks to all the members of MNDA Exeter and East Devon for organising such a wonderful event and special thanks to Kate of Cake-A-Doodle-Do for the fabulous Devon scones.

South Coast Trip – Blog Day 10 Weymouth

Checking the various possibilities for Sunday morning travel to Weymouth, we were forced to adopt plan B and travel by train, as we could not find a bus to get us to Weymouth by 11am.

We arrived in drizzle and made our way to Debenhams where Singing for MNDA was due to take place. Upon arrival we were greeted by volunteers assembling a tombola and information stand together with cream teas.

Nickey Bates

A PA was also being set up. ?We had no idea what to expect then Nickey Bates began to sing and we were treated to a glorious singing event. Nickey was followed by son Samual who sang beautifully.

Isaac Bates with brother Samuel filming

Samual’s younger brother 9 years old Isaac was next and he proved to be the star of the show. Isaac could be Weymouth answer to Billy Eliott, He sang and tapped his heart out. He did his set 3 or 4 times, each time getting a big ovation from the passing crowds.

Howard Jackson was passing by and offered to sing. This Welshman had a beautiful voice and sang a few numbers. He also offered to sing at future events.

Councillor Tia Roos talking to Jackie with Samuel holding the mike

Thank you councillor Tia Roos for coming along, we enjoyed talking with you and your support is much appreciated.

Jon Ash talking with Pam Fry

Special mention for Jon Ash who had seen an article in the local paper and came along. He was delightful and made a special trip to return with a cutting from the local paper.

Huge thanks to Mary, Steve, Nickey, Samual and Isaac and everyone in MNDA West Dorset, we enjoyed meeting with you all and loved the singing and dancing.

South Coast Trip – Blog Day 8 Southampton

Ashley Morgan on the bus to Southampton

We made our way from our hotel to the Hard Interchange in Portsmouth city centre, where we met with Ashley Morgan and Shane Dickson our travelling companions for the day, and Pam Fry.

The journey to Southampton was uneventful but bumpy. Upon arrival we made our to Guildhall Square after stopping briefly for refreshments.

At Guildhall Square we met with Councillors Paul Lewsey , Dave Sanders and Warwick Payne. We spent some time in conversation with them and we felt confident of their support for efforts to get Southampton City Council to adopt Our Charter.

Liberty Pride Cheerleaders with Fun Bus behind

The fun bus arrived and after some discussion we were shown where we might park it and then children were allowed on to enjoy the play area.

We were then entertained by Liberty Pride Cheerleaders who gave a delightful display of cheerleading and then happily distributed leaflets to onlookers around the ?square.

Thanks to all the volunteers ?and MNDA staff who came along, thanks to Liberty Pride Cheerleaders, thanks to the Funbus, thanks to the councillors and finally huge thanks to everyone who generously donated.

South Coast Trip – Blog Day 7 Portsmouth

Fantastic day, once again we were blessed with good weather.

We were dropped off by our host Kate Taylor at The Pink Pub near Bognor for our journey to Portsmouth via Chichester.

In the garden of the Rose in June

From Portsmouth we caught another bus to our hotel in Southsea. We had some lunch and explored the area around the pier. We found a big wheel which had a wheelchair gondola. Good access and great views over the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

More buses to get The Rose in June. Nobody told us bus 1 is a loop so rather confused to see buses going both ways to the same destination. ?Sorted that out and arrived on time at the venue.

Recommend The Rose in June to everyone, it is a great local pub with a fabulous garden. The garden was set up for music and a barbecue. Thanks to landlords Paul and Paul

We were entertained by two artists and enjoyed the most wonderful burgers.

Getting Muddy for MNDA.

In March this year I made the ill-considered decision to take part in Tough Mudder in the upcoming September. I say ill-considered because as I sat in a seminar at Uni was convinced by my friend, Mollie, that it?s a really good idea, that we?d train in time and that ?we?ll be fine?. Anyhow, September came around and with it the 27th day AKA the-day-we-were-in-no-way-prepared-for.

The days itself started out with myself getting up at 5:30 to go and meet the rest of the team (Mollie and Elle) to make our way to Winchester, arriving at around 10am (we had a bit of breakfast and a leisurely drive there). Upon arrival we psyched ourselves up, went to register, disclaimer in hand and prepared ourselves mentally and physically for the upcoming endeavour?

11am, the start line. After a short warm up our wave of Mudders make their way to the start line, take a pledge, have a little dance around and are generally hyped up by a man with a mic. Que, running.

The course itself is 12.5 miles long with an obstacle at every mile (not including the uphill slog in-between) so after a while found ourselves at the first proper obstacle- the Arctic Enema, yep. If you would like to see a visual of probably the worst obstacle of them all you can here. Essentially we climbed up to a platform, shot down into a pool of muddy, ice-water, caught whatever breath we could, ducked back down and swam underneath tires and made our way out of the pool. By far the worst obstacle there was, I?d say never again but my ego won?t let that happen unfortunately.

Adrenaline fuelled determination set in and off we went for the remaining 11.5 miles, as impossible as we thought the course would be, it wasn?t. One of the core values for Tough Mudder is the camaraderie, we?re all in the same boat and help each other to get to the finish line no matter what. There?s a community-like feel to it, and we are all there to lift each other up?sometimes literally.

About 4 hours later we found ourselves staring at Everest, see here. The penultimate obstacle, almost done! One huge run up later and I find myself holding on to a muddy, slippery piece of rope on a near vertical ramp…not this time, back down I slid. Second time lucky my hand was caught and three people dragged me onto the top, I can now say I?ve climbed Everest (sort of). Now for the finale, Electroshock Therapy. Essentially a wall of live wires hang down and we have to run through it to finish, here?s a picture of me making my way through:

Eve

Aaaaand we?re done! All three of us had made it through the highs and lows of Tough Mudder London South 2015, who knew we?d do it? All in all it was such an incredible experience, like nothing else and I?m so glad I could be a part of it, all the while raising money and awareness for MNDA, roll on next year!

You can see a list of the obstacles on course here (some of them are different in America but it?s essentially the same) and our JustGiving page is still live and can be found here. Money has also been raised via friends and family offline and will soon be heading to MNDA!

Here?s a very unflattering post-Tough Mudder picture (L-R Mollie, Elle and Myself):
